Our Experiences
Picking us up from our resort, the driver immediately took 15 minutes to talk with us about what we knew we wanted to see, and gain in insight in to the types of activities we were interested in. We kept it in general terms: beaches, beautiful scenery, and local life, and let him fill in the gaps.
We started out with a trip to the Langkawi Sky Bridge, which entry to was included in the cost of the trip. This was… interesting. The Sky Bridge is at the top of a mountain. At the base, there are several exhibits to look at but the main feature of the base, is the entry to the cable cars which take you up the mountain. Boarding the cars and getting going consisted of normal fanfare. Wait in line, get on, sit down, take pictures.
The day of our trip was fairly windy. Not windy enough to stop operation of the cable cars, but windy enough to make them swing back and fourth while it was going up. To make things worse, the cars typically seat 4, but are large enough to seat 6 if needed. It was just the two of us in the car so there so it was swinging more than average. This was unsettling, but survivable.
About two thirds of the way up the mountain is a landing area where you can get off and see several attractions there. In particular, this area featured the Eagles Nest. A glass bottom bridge that extends over the cliffs. If you aren’t petrified of heights, it has incredible views, and plenty of railings to death-grip. Be sure to get off at this location if you want to see this. You can not get off here on the way back down.
From there, back on the the cable cars for more swinging before getting to the top. At the top is where they actual Sky Bridge is located. An amazing 410 foot (125 meter) extended bridge with breathtaking scenery of the valley below. This was absolutely amazing and well worth the swinging cable car ride. We took our time up here and took plenty of pictures and just enjoyed the beauty.
Pro Tip: We saw many different prices for different features of this area. Read carefully and make sure you know what you are buying. This is a tourist trap and from what we saw, they do try to get you. This includes water. Bring aluminum water bottles. They do not allow you to carry plastic ones up, even though they sell plastic up there.
Then, it was time to get back on the cable car for the journey down the mountain. This time, there was another couple in the car with us so it wasn’t swinging as much. Still not as nice as it would be on a calm day, but better. We met back up with our drive and went to our second stop, Black Sand Beach.
Black Sand Beach was interesting, though not a stop I would say is a must. There are black streaks of sand caused by the erosion of granite in the area, and it did make for a nice picture, but after 10 minutes we were out of there and on to the next place, a public beach on the north side.
We never got the actual name of the beach, but outside of the amazing ocean scenery, the beach itself wasn’t worth remembering even if we did get the name. But, never ones to waste an opportunity, we walked the beach and came across a resort. We took that as a sign to stop for some food and a beverage. After a quick bite to eat, we stopped at a few other locations for scenic pictures and to take in the beauty, including TanJung Rhu and Dataran Lang, the latter of which features a very large eagle statue.
From there, we decided to stop running around and just asked the driver to take the scenic way back to our resort. By the time we got back, it had been 6 hours and we were happy. It was a beautiful day, the highlight being the Sky Bridge, despite the swinging cable cars. We would definitely do it again, though we would change the locations we would go to so that we could see new things. For the price, it is an unbeatable value.
